SUMMARY:GAHI Webinar: Bellevue House National Historic Site\, Parks Canada: A Place for Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Global Alliance for Heritage Interpretation is inviting all interpreters around the world to a series of webinars. \nTuesday 5 May 21:00 CEST\nBellevue House National Historic Site\, Parks Canada: A Place for Conversation \nIn this presentation\, Bellevue House Team member with host Tamara van Dyk\, will share experiences interpreting Sir John A. Macdonald through collaboration and dialogue at Bellevue House National Historic Site. \nBellevue House is located in Kingston\, Ontario\, Canada in Cataracoui/Ka’tarohkwi\, on the land of the Wendat\, the Anishinaabe\, and the Haudenosaunee. This Parks Canada site is an Italianate villa built around 1841 for a merchant of settler origin. Macdonald rented Bellevue House for thirteen months between 1848 and 1849\, nearly two decades before becoming prime minister of the new Dominion of Canada in 1867. Since 1967 the site had shared Macdonald’s vision for Canada as a British society. \nIn 2024\, the site reopened\, offering a renewed visitor experience focused on sharing Canadian history. Today\, at Bellevue House\, alongside the life history of Macdonald\, we share the impact of his governments’ policies through the many voices of confederation\, where Indigenous Peoples communicate their experiences of actions taken to serve this vision. Macdonald’s life and complex legacy are interpreted through conversation and from multiple perspectives. \nTamara van Dyk is the Site & Visitor Experience Manager at Bellevue House where she builds teams\, fosters engagement\, and provides experiences that incorporate an inclusive approach to interpretation of this historic site\, located on Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe traditional lands\, in Kingston Ontario. With over 35 years\, she has worked across Canada in interpretation\, outdoor education\, and product development to inspire protection of Canadas diverse natural and cultural heritage. Living the dream and looking forward to this next adventure. \nParticipation is free of charge. You can register here.

SUMMARY:GAHI Webinar: Presenting Empaths\, where communities and heritage professionals come together
DESCRIPTION:Global Alliance for Heritage Interpretation is inviting all interpreters around the world to a series of webinars. \nPolicies say heritage must encourage community participation in heritage interpretation (HI) yet despite the best intentions\, many heritage professionals still struggle with the skills and techniques to effectively deliver participatory HI. \nIn parallel with its established training programme\, IE has subsequently teamed up with Greek\, Italian and Austrian partners in a two-year Erasmus+-funded project to develop and test a pilot online and onsite training programme to upskill heritage professionals with these necessary competencies where people participate and interpreters facilitate. \nJoin the project team for a lively panel discussion to learn more about Empaths\, to chart progress to date and share key findings and lessons learned as they gear up to the test the training programme in three very different pilot territories during 2026. \nThe Empaths partnership includes Interpret Europe which is paired with UNESCO Global Geopark Karawanken-Karavanke straddling the Austria-Slovenia border\, Greek professional training provider\, HERITΛGE with its partner the Ethnological Museum of Thrace and The Story Behind\, an Italian consultancy specialising ethical branding\, storytelling and HI which is teamed with the Archaeological Park of Campi Flegrei near Naples. \nMore info: https://empaths-project.eu \nParticipation is free of charge. You can register here.

SUMMARY:NAI Conference "Navigating Changing Tides"
DESCRIPTION:Selected for the site of the NAI 2024 National Conference\, St Augustine\, Florida has been “Navigating Changing Tides” historically\, culturally\, and environmentally for hundreds of years. The site of great tragedy as well as great hope and celebration\, it is a perfect site for sparking interpretive conversations. \nThe surrounding area has been an indigenous homeland\, a colony\, a military fort\, a target of piracy\, a respite for the Gullah Geechee population\, a center for civil rights advancement\, a city of wealth and leisure\, a college town\, and a popular tourist attraction. Located on the Atlantic shore of northern Florida\, St Augustine has 43 miles of pristine beaches\, and is currently one of the fastest growing counties in the US. Changes related to population growth and increasingly severe weather patterns\, also make this area an environmental hot spot. No matter your interpretive focus\, you will meet with amazing peers in St Augustine in which to share ideas\, grow with\, and learn from.

SUMMARY:Interpreting our heritage for a better tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Cultural and natural heritages are the floor from which people look to the future. They are home to great opportunities. One of them is its possibility to help connect people with their places\, their history\, or to learn about the stories of others; as well as to recognize the value of the natural environment in which we live. When these heritages are disseminated in an enjoyable\, fun and meaningful way\, people strengthen their ideas about the fact that there are things worth pursuing and preserving. \nThe interpretation of heritage helps the bond between people and their heritages to grow and become more resistant to the ups and downs of our modernity\, suggesting that it is worth stopping to appreciate our environment\, our history and our historical moment. \nWith the tools of heritage interpretation\, tourist guides\, museographers\, disseminators in nature reserves\, biological reserves\, historical or archaeological sites\, archivists and other people who work closely with cultural and natural heritage\, obtain tools to provide memorable and meaningful experiences to their visitors\, while contributing to the preservation of the richness of our heritage. \nInterpatMx\, Mexican Association of Heritage Interpreters\, invites interpreters\, disseminators\, mediators and communicators of cultural and natural heritage to its First Face-to-Face Congress on Heritage Interpretation under the theme Interpreting our Heritages for a Better Tomorrow. \nThis will take place on October 3\, 4 and 5\, 2024 in the city of Morelia\, Michoacán (Mexico) in face-to-face mode.

SUMMARY:IE Conference Sustainability: Challenging mindsets through heritage interpretation
DESCRIPTION:Block 21 to 24 March 2024 in your calendar for the Interpret Europe conference entitled Sustainability: Challenging mindsets through heritage interpretation! \nThere is hardly any layer in our societal tissue that is not concerned by the serious situation that we are currently facing. Mainstream politics advocate more sustainable growth\, since any solution other than growth seems unacceptable to many people. On the other hand\, activists believe that people need to make a radical shift in their mindsets and lifestyles. \nCould museums\, monuments\, parks and other heritage sites help people to interpret heritage in a way that makes them more mindful towards our common future? Could they complement formal learning that is usually more focused on knowledge by reflecting upon our shared values? Could they also use the interpretive approach to initiate bottom-up movements and foster local small-scale initiatives leading to more sustainable thinking and acting? \nValue-based heritage interpretation has been recognised by UNESCO as a promising approach for fostering peace and sustainability and it is already being adopted by dozens of World Heritage Sites across Europe. Can it challenge people’s mindsets in a way that doesn’t focus on doom and gloom but keeps their spirits up for successful transition? \nKoper\, a green-labelled multicultural destination\, will be the location for our exchanges on such questions. Capodistria or Capo d’Istria\, as the Venetians called it\, is a small harbour city and the bilingual capital of the Slovenian coastal region\, but the conference will also be hosted by a dozen of other heritage sites from Slovenia\, Croatia\, and Italy. This lively crossroads area of cultures and languages\, the junction of South\, West and East\, is rich in history\, with a difficult past but now a more peaceful coexistence in a united Europe that should be able to inspire us. What’s more\, the karst hinterland with its countless underground caves\, Mediterranean vegetation and the wild  fir and spruce forests of the Dinaric Alps\, home to numerous rare species\, will provide us with many opportunities for taking deep breaths in nature. \nKoper can be reached by public transport from Ljubljana in 1.5 to 2.5 hours\, from Venice by bus in 3h\, and from Trieste centre in 30 minutes. Please consider travelling across Europe slower and cleaner by train or by bus\, meeting colleagues and visiting places on your way. \nThe conference will be organised by the UNESCO Chair for Interpretation and Education for Enhancing Integrated Heritage Approaches at the University of Primorska and the Faculty of Humanities UP. Primorska\, on the Adriatic coast\, is the westernmost region of Slovenia and the university building\, on the picturesque mediaeval town square of Koper\, will be our main venue. \nMake sure you join us in March 2024 at the IE conference entitled Sustainability: Challenging mindsets through heritage interpretation! \nIt offers an exciting programme created by colleagues from all over the world with speeches\, workshops\, presentations\, study visits and much more. You will be informed about travel\, accommodation\, presentations and much more in September. \nWe look forward to welcoming you to Slovenia – and its neighbours!
