SUMMARY:IE Webinar: Could heritage interpretation provide an alternative to quick consumption of bucket-list experiences?
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 2 July 2024\, 09:00 CEST \nThis webinar explores how tourist guides can continue to fulfil their role as heritage interpreters with the role of heritage interpretation evolving and destinations experiencing overtourism.\nTourist guides\, who are part of the economic model of tourism\, need to work with or around given conditions and expectations. They need to use their guiding skills and embrace the interpretive approach in order to tackle challenges. Our session will look briefly at top tips for guiding skills and will discuss interpretation skills for larger groups within a commercial itinerary\, such as expectation management\, fostering a suitable environment for thinking and reflection\, turning visitors from passive consumers into active participants and seeking out interpretive encounters. If you would like to join for this webinar\, register here. \nViola Lewis\, is a qualified Blue Badge Tourist Guide for Scotland\, and a trainer of tourist guides worldwide. She has a passion for opening hearts and minds of visitors and of those attending her training events. Since qualifying with the Scottish Tourist Guides Association in 2002\, she has served on various committees and as Training Manager\, shaping tourist guide training and accreditation policies. She continued this work with the European Federation of Tourist Guides Associations and now the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations. She advocates for Tourism for All\, sustainable tourism and value-based heritage interpretation.

SUMMARY:IE Webinar: Value-based heritage interpretation
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 14 May 2024\, 09:00 CEST \nFive years ago\, UNESCO defined value-based heritage interpretation (VBHI) to meet the challenges of the 21st century. IE decided to support this initiative. It revised its mission and aligned its training programme with this approach. But what does VBHI actually mean? What is new and what challenges and opportunities does it bring? The webinar aims to answer these questions. It is based on an introductory event currently being tested by IE and scheduled to launch in October. If you would like to join for this webinar\, register here. \nThorsten Ludwig (Germany)\, MSc Interpretation\, worked in a national park until 1993\, when he founded Bildungswerk Interpretation as his own company to provide interpretive training and planning. As IE Managing Director (2015-2021)\, he worked with UNESCO on the development of VBHI.

SUMMARY:IE Webinar: Making it a part of us\, becoming part of it. How to approach heritage?
DESCRIPTION:What is heritage? All of us have different answers depending on the particular context we are involved in. Yet it is often impossible to describe the subject of our interpretive work properly without putting it into different boxes: Cultural/natural\, tangible/intangible\, ordinary/canonized. In this webinar\, we will set aside these and other similar categories and introduce a concept which can influence how we work with different phenomena. We will claim that heritage has a dual nature and that this duality influences how we perceive it and how it develops over time. If you would like to join for this webinar\, register here.\n\nÁrpád Bőczén is a Hungarian architect\, heritage manager\, DJ\, president of KÖME / Association of Cultural Heritage Managers\, IE country coordinator and certified trainer. He is a project manager\, researcher and professional consultant in different projects related to education\, communication\, surveying\, development and maintenance of all kinds of cultural heritage and heritage communities. His main interests are the relations between heritage\, landscape and cultural changes.

SUMMARY:IE Webinar: Visitor research and segmentation - Does it still make sense?
DESCRIPTION:The presentation will look at different approaches to visitor segmentation. Based on four case studies and reviews of 24 interpretive plans\, it will also discuss good and bad practice in visitor research. He studied HI at UHI in Scotland\, building upon his previous education in natural history (MSc) and humanities (MA). Michal works on various interpretation projects in his role as director of the Czech Institute for Heritage Interpretation and he also lectures in HI at Masaryk University\, Brno. SUMMARY:IE Webinar: Heritage interpretation or not? – Glimpses from a museum study
DESCRIPTION:If you ask Bulgarian museums\, very few of them will tell you they are doing heritage interpretation. They will tell you they apply different tools of informal education\, arts and creativity\, interactive pedagogy and innovative design. And then they will invite you to their Children’s Corner for a feel of prehistory; or to their Summer Schools of arts and crafts\, their festivals of ancient life and their temporary exhibitions of the times when the Bulgarian capital was bombed during WWII. Is this an interpretation of our heritage? Let’s see… \nSimana  Markovska has 25-years’ experience in the NGO sector\, working for the sustainable development of local communities through tourism. She does a lot of freelance consulting and training in the fields of sustainable tourism\, environmental education\, strategic planning and project management. She is also a licensed tour guide and travel agent; as well as a passionate traveler\, blogger and travel journalist. Heritage interpretation has been a passion of hers since 1996 when she came across Sam Ham’s Practical Guide for People with Big ideas and Small Budgets. That is why her PhD theme is also dedicated to this – s HI the best strategy for placing museums in their rightful status as modern tourist sites? She’s sharing with us some of her findings made in the course of her PhD research. \n

SUMMARY:IE Webinar: Interpreting heritage without any heritage around us
DESCRIPTION:  \nInterpreters work with almost everything and almost everywhere\, and some believe that heritage interpretation has some kind of magic power … but how can interpret heritage if we have no heritage around us? In reality\, in some contexts such as during intense rainfall on a mountain shelter\, in a conference hall or even at home on a videoconference event\, interpreters usually face a context without relevant phenomena that can offer first hand experiences or help the demonstration of interpretation possibilities. \nThis webinar will use three simple activities to illustrate the potential of interpretation that we can run in places and contexts that seem to have no heritage nearby. This will stimulate some reflection about heritage and the multitude of ways in which we can approach it. \nPedro Morais is Consultant and trainer in ecotourism\, heritage Interpretation and sustainability in tourism with a PhD in Ecology from UAM (Madrid). Founder of INTERPRETARE – Portuguese Heritage Interpretation and the Portuguese Association of Ecotourism. He is a CIG certified trainer with Interpret Europe.

SUMMARY:IE Webinar: The Roman military site of Călugăreni. Challenges of research and heritage protection.
DESCRIPTION:Călugăreni/Mikháza is a traditional village în Transylvania\, Romania\, and was recently included in the programme of the IE conference 2023. During antiquity\, this region was part of the vast defensive system (the ‘limes’) of the Roman Empire\, protecting Dacia’s eastern frontier. Besides its very important Roman heritage\, the village’s 17th century Franciscan friary is still standing along with a handful of vernacular-style farmsteads. These three are all an integral part of the village landscape and create a complex challenge in how to protect and present them in the most authentic way possible. The imminent WHS status of the Roman archaeological site provokes new community and visitor friendly solutions for the development of the Călugăreni/Mikháza Archaeological Park. This presentation will showcase the various challenges and solutions that arise. \n  \nSzilamér-Péter Pánczél is head of the Roman Limes Research Centre at the Mureș County Museum. As an archaeologist specialising in Roman material culture and non-invasive archaeological research methods\, he has been coordinating several international research projects in Romania and Albania. He’s also been creating several workshops and organising events dedicated to the dissemination of understanding Roman heritage. \n
