SUMMARY:IE Conference: Re-interpreting heritage in the light of Faro
DESCRIPTION:16-19 April 2026 in Faro\, Portugal \nWe will gather in Faro to discuss how interpretation can enhance the value of heritage – both natural and cultural – for people and societies in European democracies.\nIt was here where the Council of Europe launched the “Faro Convention” in 2005\, embarking on a journey towards more democratic\, people-centred\, and value-based practices in dealing with Europe’s heritage.\nThe official legal text refers to cultural heritage only\, its underlying rationale matters for all heritage interpretation\, including natural heritage\, as Europe is facing multiple challenges.\nJoin us to discuss how the Faro spirit can inspire theory and practice of interpretation. And\, vice versa\, how new approaches to co-creative interpretation can empower Faro heritage communities while strengthening cohesion of democratic societies committed to European values and sustainable development as ideals which are rooted in Europe’s past. Find out more about the theme and call for papers here.  \nThe city of Faro and its surroundings\, in Portugal’s Algarve\, are alluringly rich in natural and cultural heritage. \nFaro is situated in the extreme south-west of Europe and the whole region has been shaped throughout history by the succession and coexistence of diverse cultures and religions arriving by land and sea. It can look back on a turbulent past and it displays traces of these events everywhere. Many names in present-day Portugal and Spain testify to the influence of Romans\, Byzantines\, Visigoths and finally Moors. For centuries\, explorers set sail from the Iberian Peninsula exporting\, in turn\, influences from this region.\n \nWhat the Muslims once called Al Gharb\, which simply meant the West\, is what we now know as the Algarve and\, with plenty of sunshine and beaches\, it is one of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations. But the Algarve is much more than that. Between the Atlantic Ocean and the mountains in the hinterland\, we can discover a diverse landscape rich in natural and cultural treasures. \nThis geologically diverse landscape is the home of carob\, fig\, almond and eucalyptus trees\, not to mention the ancient olive trees and mighty cork oaks. The people of the Algarve have always known how to use the assets of the region and old traditions live on in many places\, many adapted to the times. \nRegister here: Interpret Europe conference 2026 – Registration

SUMMARY:GAHI Webinar: Presenting Empaths\, where communities and heritage professionals come together
DESCRIPTION:Global Alliance for Heritage Interpretation is inviting all interpreters around the world to a series of webinars. \nPolicies say heritage must encourage community participation in heritage interpretation (HI) yet despite the best intentions\, many heritage professionals still struggle with the skills and techniques to effectively deliver participatory HI. \nIn parallel with its established training programme\, IE has subsequently teamed up with Greek\, Italian and Austrian partners in a two-year Erasmus+-funded project to develop and test a pilot online and onsite training programme to upskill heritage professionals with these necessary competencies where people participate and interpreters facilitate. \nJoin the project team for a lively panel discussion to learn more about Empaths\, to chart progress to date and share key findings and lessons learned as they gear up to the test the training programme in three very different pilot territories during 2026. \nThe Empaths partnership includes Interpret Europe which is paired with UNESCO Global Geopark Karawanken-Karavanke straddling the Austria-Slovenia border\, Greek professional training provider\, HERITΛGE with its partner the Ethnological Museum of Thrace and The Story Behind\, an Italian consultancy specialising ethical branding\, storytelling and HI which is teamed with the Archaeological Park of Campi Flegrei near Naples. \nMore info: https://empaths-project.eu \nParticipation is free of charge. You can register here.

SUMMARY:NAI National Conference in Virginia Beach
DESCRIPTION:Fort Collins\, CO — The National Association for Interpretation (NAI) opened registration for the annual NAI National Conference\, the largest annual gathering of heritage interpreters in the world. The event brings more than 600 professionals to a different corner of the United States annually. This year\, the conference will be held in Virginia Beach\, Virginia\, November 11–15. The conference slogan\, “Virginia Beach is for Interpreters\,” plays off the state’s iconic call to tourists\, “Virginia is for Lovers\,” adopted in 1969.\n\nPark rangers\, environmental educators\, living history interpreters\, tour guides\, docents\, and other nonformal educators will convene in an area replete with nature\, culture\, and history—and names! It’s known as Neptune City\, Hampton Roads\, Coastal Virginia\, and Tidewater. Within just a few miles\, nature lovers will find a zoo\, an aquarium\, a botanical garden\, a natural history museum\, and a state park. For interpreters of culture and history\, the area plays host to thousands of years of Indigenous history\, Black history\, military history\, and the colonial establishment of the United States.\n\nThe program has been carefully crafted to have broad application for front-line interpreters\, managers\, planners\, and others in the field. More than 70 concurrent sessions will address hot topics in the field and practical skills for interpreters. Opening keynote speakers Yuria Celidwen and Dacher Keltner will present “The ABC of Nature: Awe\, Belonging\, and Contemplation\,” and a closing keynote by André Copeland will address perceptions of truth and facts.\n\nPre-conference workshops will explore topics relevant to the field\, such as partnerships\, questioning our perspective\, dialogic interpretation\, and more\, while post-conference field trips will explore the natural\, historic\, and cultural heritage of the region. Participants will have the opportunity to network with peers and learn from cutting-edge vendors and exhibitors throughout the week.\n\nFor more information\, visit NAI 2025 online at nai-us.org/conference.

SUMMARY:Eighteenth International Conference on the Inclusive Museum
DESCRIPTION:Conference Themes and Special Focus\nFounded in 2008\, The Inclusive Museum Research Network is brought together by a shared concern for the future role of the museum and how it can become more inclusive. We seek to build an epistemic community where we can make linkages across disciplinary\, geographic\, and cultural boundaries. As a Research Network\, we are defined by our scope and concerns and motivated to build strategies for action framed by our shared themes and tensions. \nThe Eighteenth International Conference on the Inclusive Museum calls for research addressing the following annual themes and special focus: \n\nTheme 1: Visitors\nTheme 2: Collections\nTheme 3: Representations\n\nGalleries\, Libraries\, Archives\, and Museums are the four critical domains of heritage collections that collaborate and coordinate their shared agendas and work together with UNESCO. There are emerging common concerns among them. All are rethinking community cultural engagement\, positioning themselves as civic spaces for the culture\, health\, and well-being of stakeholder communities. Relevance and inclusion are critical benchmarks along with climate crisis responsiveness and sustainability—economic\, social\, cultural\, and environmental. In this context\, we look forward to interdisciplinary interrogation\, evidence-based case studies\, and demonstration projects in Zaragoza.

SUMMARY:Speak at NEMO’s European Museum Conference “Can we talk? Museums facing polarisation”
DESCRIPTION:NEMO’s European Museum Conference “Can we talk? Museums facing polarisation”\, taking place from 10-12 November 2024 in Sibiu\, Romania\, seeks to address the vital role museums (can) play in today’s challenged democracies. Be part of shaping the conference by submitting a proposal for the programme until 19 June. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur societies are facing massive and disruptive challenges\, and societal divisions seem to deepen by the day. Cultural institutions such as museums\, therefore\, are increasingly under pressure. At the NEMO European Museum Conference we will together explore the power museums have to face polarisation: Which possibilities do museums have to navigate controversies and foster dialogue and debate? How can museums better respond when caught in the crosshairs of socio-political debate? Additionally\, the conference will discuss how to build strong relationships with underrepresented groups and foster their representation in polarising times. Finally\, we will bring to light the growing political pressure that museums worldwide are grappling with; inviting and analysing possible (re)actions as models for prevention. \nLet’s get inspired by examples from European museums and successful strategies from other sectors and reflect on our museums’ operations and the options we have – including effective community engagement\, governance models\, and conflict management strategies.

SUMMARY:FRH Conference 2024 "Religious Heritage in Transition: Challenges and Solutions"
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 FRH Conference\, “Religious Heritage in Transition: Challenges and Solutions” will take place from 22-24 September in Krakow\, Poland. \nReligious heritage must respond to the changes brought about by the emergence of new digital technologies\, the effects of climate change and the way we understand\, relate to and value our historic buildings and intangible heritage in 21st-century Europe. Our conference will explore existing initiatives and possible future solutions so that the various actors involved in religious heritage\, including heritage professionals\, academics\, policy makers at all levels\, religious bodies and European citizens\, do not fall behind in this triple transition (green\, digital and social). \nThe conference will address this overarching topic through four sub-themes: \n\nResilient Heritage: climate change\, armed conflicts\, migration\, secularisation and demographic changes are current challenges that can lead to the deterioration\, abandonment or even loss of religious heritage. This sub-theme will explore current efforts to address these urgent threats.\nSustainable Solutions: this sub-theme will address the long-term sustainability of religious buildings\, looking at trends in adaptive reuse\, protection of heritage crafts linked to built religious heritage and ecological sustainability in a context where more and more religious buildings are being closed\, neglected or underused every year.\nDigital Futures: the digital transition has brought with it a wealth of new possibilities for the study\, management\, protection and promotion of religious heritage\, but it has also raised many questions about the long-term impact of these technologies on the sector\, especially on traditional crafts.\nQuality of Life: religious heritage is often associated with various social\, cultural and spiritual values\, which are closely related to mental health and emotional well-being. This sub-theme will explore how sacred places positively influence people’s health\, especially cultural tourism\, pilgrimage routes and the protection of biodiversity and green spaces.\n\nThe venue will be the Galicia Jewish Museum\, an active institution in the preservation and promotion of Jewish culture in Poland with two permanent exhibitions dedicated to past and contemporary Jewish culture and life in the historic region of Galicia. SUMMARY:Museums\, Co-Creation and Making Change
DESCRIPTION:In this study day\, led by leading co-creation consultant Stella Toonen\, you will explore approaches to achieving meaningful co-creation with communities and inspiring community-led change in your museum. This workshop will consider the values that can inform co-creation practices and explore different models for best practice when it comes to listening to community needs and dreams\, sharing power\, embedding democratic decision-making\, and managing open-ended projects that aim to inspire change. \nYou will have a chance to consider how such approaches might change your organisation or practice from within. You’ll also hear about case studies from museums in London\, Manchester and New York and there will be time to build tailored strategies for your own projects and the wider impact that they might be able to make across your museum. \nWorkshop leader Stella Toonen is a specialist in co-creation practices in museums. As a researcher and museum practitioner\, Stella consults internationally about co-creation\, collaborative practice\, community engagement\, constituent museums\, and cultural democracy. Her background is as an exhibition and public programmes producer for museums and the programmes she shapes often feature place-based\, participatory and socially engaged ways of working. \nPower to Communities: Museums\, Co-Creation and Making Change\nStudy Day\, 20 February 2024\, London \nWorkshop leader: Stella Toonen is currently writing up her doctoral research with Tate and King’s College London\, which looks at the potential for community engagement work as a catalyst for organisational change. As part of her PhD research Stella spent three years with the Tate Exchange project at Tate Modern in London\, and also conducted fieldwork at the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester and the Queens Museum in New York. In addition\, Stella is Programme Director for Culture Within Newham.

SUMMARY:International Conference: Taboo in Cultural Heritage
DESCRIPTION:In the spring and summer of 2020\, a wave of statue defacements and removals spread across the world. As part of the Black Lives Matter protests\, monuments in many countries were labeled as inappropriate due to their relationship with colonial histories and racial injustices. This ‘burdened heritage’ was considered taboo: something that should not have a physical presence in public space. In that same year\, as a direct reaction to the Black Lives Matter protests\, the exhibition Are Jews white? (Jewish Museum\, Amsterdam) tried to break a taboo by discussing color and the question of where Jews find themselves in the identity politics spectrum of Black and White. \nSoon after\, a controversy about the ‘uniqueness’ and ‘comparability’ of the Holocaust arose: ‘Historikerstreit 2.0’ as it was frequently called\, with reference to the debate of the late 1980s. A number of historians pointed to the taboo against challenging the ‘uniqueness’ of the Holocaust by comparing it with colonial violence\, which is also present in the memory of these histories in today’s society (e.g.\, in monuments\, exhibitions\, restitution issues\, debates about apologies and reparations\, etc.). \nTaboo is a subject\, word\, or action that is avoided or forbidden for religious\, social or political reasons. Although there are certain taboos that appear to be virtually universal\, most taboos vary with cultures and times. Objects\, sites\, or practices appropriated as cultural heritage\, can at a later moment in history be redesignated as problematic\, no longer conforming to certain norms and values. Conversely\, (former) taboos can be contested\, eventually triggering the ‘heritagization’ and display of hitherto banned objects and sites. \nUnsurprisingly\, taboo and tabooed issues get less attention in humanities and heritage practices than the canon or the canonized. However\, canon and taboo could be considered two sides of the same coin; they are interdependent. For that reason alone\, it is important to address the subject of taboo as well\, and not turn a blind eye to it. For example\, the canonization of modernist art after World War II went hand in hand with tabooing art produced under National Socialism. Nowadays\, there is a renewed interest at museums in exhibiting these works\, sparking controversy and debate. \nThis international conference aims to reflect on the concept of taboo in relation to cultural heritage in the context of colonialism and national socialism and their reverberations in society. What can the dynamics of taboo convey about today’s globalizing world? How have taboos shaped (and continue to shape) and impacted the process of cultural heritage making? How do taboos generate heritage dissonance (Tunbridge and Ashworth\, 1996)? How does the concept apply to ‘difficult heritage’ (Macdonald\, 2009)? How do/could/should cultural heritage professionals deal with questioning the display\, adjustment or removal of such ‘burdened heritage’\, and is every heritage professional and scholar ‘allowed’ to address every topic? \nConfirmed keynote speakers: \n\nBerber Bevernage (Ghent\, Belgium)\nPumla Gobodo-Madikizela (Stellenbosch\, South Africa)\nSharon Macdonald (Berlin\, Germany)\nMichael Rothberg (Los Angeles\, USA)\n\n

SUMMARY:Transforming through co-creation: participatory heritage practices tackling urban challenges
DESCRIPTION:Cultural heritage practices are no longer exclusive to heritage professionals. Across multiple fields\, the importance and benefits of collaborating with multiple stakeholders are increasingly acknowledged and promoted\, with particular attention to the participation of communities\, groups\, and individuals. Different forms of multi-stakehodlers’ participation in heritage practices have been widely researched worldwide\, highlighting the benefits and challenges of these practices in different contexts\, but also revealing that some forms of participation may not lead to the intended results. Research also argues that empowering participatory heritage practices has transformative power\, thus contributing to more inclusive and equitable societies\, effective management of cultural and natural resources\, and sustainable development of the living environment. Hence\, participatory heritage practices can be key to tackling contemporary urban challenges and building resilient cities in this time of uncertainty. \n\n\nSince its adoption in 2005\, the Convention on the Value of Cultural Heritage for Society has aimed to promote more deliberative democratic processes and to foster the engagement of heritage communities in heritage management for the mutual benefits of heritage\, its governance\, society\, the local economy\, and the environment. Promoting co-creation approaches for a more sustainable\, inclusive\, participatory\, and high-quality living environment is at the root of many contemporary urban agendas (i.e. New European  Bauhaus\, New Urban Agenda\, etc.). Co-creation is a form of collaborative intervention that fosters the participation of relevant stakeholders to achieve common goals. Applied to the heritage field\, it aims at gathering those who convey value to heritage and are affected by its practices\, namely the “heritage community” proposed by the Faro Convention. To explore and address existing needs\, opportunities\, and challenges\, while attending to the ideation\, implementation\, and monitoring of solutions. However\, there is no simple road map for co-creation. The challenges range from engaging politicians and decision-makers to the definition of adequate tailor-made approaches to engage with communities\, groups\, and individuals in different contexts\, and the actual adoption and integration of co-created solutions into urban management practices. Therefore\, how to go beyond participation’s good intentions? What resources are there for local governments who want to make a change? How to sustain more deliberative democratic governance structures? How to implement truly transformative participatory approaches?

SUMMARY:NAI 2023 Conference
DESCRIPTION:2023 Keynotes\nThe keynotes for NAI 2023 will be Minnijean Brown Trickey and Spirit Tawfiq. \nThe opening keynote will be provided by Minnijean Brown Trickey\, one of the nine African American students who collectively resisted opposition to desegregate Little Rock Central High School in 1957\, with protection from federal troops. \nSpirit Tawfiq will provide the closing keynote. Spirit is a creative changemaker\, antiracism educator and founder of Roots of the Spirit\, an organization created to uproot racism through storytelling\, education\, and the arts. \nAbout the host city\nThe city selected for the 2023 NAI National Conference was built on land formerly occupied by Quapaw natives\, and perhaps earlier Plum Bayou natives. European trappers\, traders\, and settlers traveled up a large river (later to be known as the Arkansas River) looking for resources and trading partnerships with the Quapaw and other groups occupying the river’s valley. Travelers used “French Rock” (also known as La Grande Roche) on the north bank and La Petite Roche on the south bank as landmarks. \nThe capital of Arkansas\, Little Rock\, was founded in 1831 on the south bank and is now home to over 200\,000 residents. Visitors to this city are often surprised at the bustling downtown area located along the banks of the Arkansas River. Modern walking paths\, sculpture gardens\, six pedestrian bridges crossing the river\, and a host of natural\, history\, and cultural museums provide a feeling of inclusion and welcome.

SUMMARY:ReBalance/Exploring Balance\, equity and the environment - changing the climate of natural and cultural interpretation
DESCRIPTION:Join us this October in the stunning cathedral city of Lincoln as we explore the theme of balance across people\, communities and nature \nThe challenges of today’s world lead us to look beyond our usual drive to provoke\, relate and reveal – and to focus on people\, communities and their environment. This year we will be exploring how heritage interpretation adds value to the key issues of our times – biodiversity\, environmental sustainability\, social inclusion and urban regeneration. \nOur venue for this year’s conference is The Lincoln Hotel\, which has the city’s iconic cathedral as a spectacular backdrop. In addition to our packed programme of inspirational speakers and site visits we’ll be announcing the winners of the 2023 AHI Engaging People Awards \nIn amongst all this there will be plenty of time for the most valuable part of any AHI conference – networking\, getting to know each other and comparing our own stories and experiences.

SUMMARY:EUROPARC CONFERENCE 2023 - TRIBUTE TO OUR LANDSCAPE
DESCRIPTION:THEME: Tribute to our Landscape | where nature and people meet in harmony\, in perspective of 50 years of EUROPARC Federation.\nMany areas in Europe\, especially in the Netherlands\, are man-made or places where humans have (had) an important influence on the way in which nature and biodiversity are protected\, managed\, experienced and used. \nLandscape is about the interactions between earth\, nature and man and also the connections between past\, present and future. \nWithin our theme\, ‘Tribute to our landscape\, where nature and people meet in harmony’\, we respond to important current developments in health\, climate\, sustainable economy and what major transitions await us in the future. \nThe celebration of 50 years of EUROPARC Federation will form an important element in the programme. Our 50 years of experience in handling issues and finding solutions can be of great value\, if we are capable of linking them to the challenges of tomorrow. \nThis is why we would like to invite all participants to learn from what we have done so far\, to be better prepared for the future: learning from the past\, preparing for the future.
