SUMMARY:8th international conference on cultural sustainable tourism
DESCRIPTION:The Eighth Edition of the Cultural Sustainable Tourism (CST) conference is set to be hosted on September 8th-10th\, 2026. Building upon the great success of its seven preceding editions\, CST 2026 marks itself as a reference on the intersection of culture\, tourism\, and sustainability. Previous conferences have diligently explored the preservation of cultural heritage\, the environmental impacts of tourism\, the economic benefits for local communities\, and the burgeoning role of digital integration in enhancing the tourist experience. These discussions have cemented the understanding that cultural tourism\, when managed responsibly\, is an indispensable tool for heritage conservation\, community empowerment\, and economic development. \nHowever\, the contemporary landscape of travel and cultural exchange is rapidly evolving\, presenting unprecedented challenges and opportunities. Global shifts\, including the accelerating impacts of climate change on vulnerable cultural sites\, the rise of over-tourism in popular destinations\, and the increasing demand for authentic and transformative travel experiences\, necessitate a paradigm shift. Traditional approaches to sustainability\, while important\, are now recognized as foundational\, compelling us to move towards a more active\, restorative\, and regenerative model of cultural tourism\, eco-tourism\, religious tourism and Transnational cultural tourism. This demands that our engagements not only minimize harm but actively contribute to the revitalization of cultural ecosystems\, both tangible tourism and intangible tourism\, and the well-being of host communities. \nTherefore\, CST 2026\, therefore\, will focus on “Regenerative models of future tourism.” This overarching theme in the tourism sector aims to actively enhance cultural integrity\, ecological health\, and social equity\, leaving destinations more vibrant and resilient than before. We aim to explore how cultural tourism can become a genuine force for positive change\, moving beyond mere preservation to active regeneration. \nThis conference will serve as an important interdisciplinary platform\, which is useful for academics\, cultural heritage experts\, tourism professionals\, policymakers\, local communities\, and technologists. CST’s goal is to collectively define and implement the next generation of cultural sustainable tourism\, concluding innovative solutions and collaborative strategies. Through keynote sessions\, insightful panel discussions\, and high-quality research presentations\, CST 2026 will facilitate a rich dialogue among stakeholders\, promoting initiatives that enhance cultural authenticity\, build community resilience\, and contribute meaningfully to global sustainability goals.

DESCRIPTION:The 19th Conference for Cultural Tourism in Europe will be held in Skiathos\, Greece\, on 23-26 September 2026\, with overall theme:\nSustainable Tourism Strategy and Culture Compass for Europe:\n​Synergies for Regenerative\, Smart and Resilient Cultural Tourism\n \nThe 19th ECTN conference with main theme ”Sustainable Tourism Startegy and Culture Compass for Europe:\n​Synergies for Regenerative\, Smart and Resilient Cultural Tourism” ​will discuss the latest trends in the field of culture\, heritage\, smart and sustainable tourism; including innovation\, ​resilience and renegerative cultural tourism development (for the 1st time). The emphasis will be on the important role of culture and heritage\, digitalisation\, resilience\, regeneration and sustainability\, related to enhancing visitor experiences\, smart tourism\, and smart destinations. \nKey latest developments at the European level will be particularly the focus in 2026\, suchas the forthcoming EU Sustainable Tourism Strategy (expected to be launched in April 2026) and the Culture Compass for Europe\, already launched in November 2025 and including Cultural Tourism. \n​The ECTN 2025 Conference is organised in the framework of the INSPIRES SMP Project\, the ‘Transition Pathway for Tourism‘ co-implementation (European Commission DG MOVE\, formerly DG GROW)\, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) concerning Tourism.  \nThe conference aims to explore major challenges\, risks and opportunities for resilient\, smart\, sustainable\, and regenerative tourism development related to culture and heritage assets\, as well as suggest practical steps for the development and promotion of cultural tourism products. The theme encompasses all forms of culture\, including contemporary cultural expressions\, all forms of cultural heritage and smart solutions.\n \nPresenters are invited to showcase relevant experience\, share their best practices\, give detailed examples\, and provide practical recommendations for preserving\, restoring\, deploying\, and promoting culture and heritage values\, with innovations for smart\, sustainable\, and regenerative tourism development.\n  \nThe conference is organised in close cooperation with the Skiathos Municipality and ECTN members. \nThe submitted Abstracts should address at least one of the following topics linked to resilient\, smart\, and sustainable cultural and heritage tourism: \n\nResilience in Sustainable Cultural Tourism Destinations (linked to the INSPIRES SMP-COSME project)\, including natural heritage\, green transition\, and climate action.\nCreative Tourism and Co-Creating Cultural Tourism Experiences. Supported by the Creative Tourism Network.\nDigitalisation in Smart Tourism Cultural Heritage and Creativity aspects\, enhancing visitor experiences (linked to the ‘Smart Tour’ Interreg Europe project). Supprted by Europeana.\nTransnational Thematic Tourism products involving Culture and Heritage\, including European Cultural Routes and European Heritage Label networks\, cross-border and multi-destination tourism initiatives involving at least 2 countries.\nActive\, Slow and Accessible Tourism. Walking\, Cycling and Hiking Tourism around Culture and Heritage. Supported by ENAT\nRegenerative Tourism and Heritage-led Destination Regeneration. Taking place in the framework of the European Heritage Hub\, the event will support the EU-funded platform’s mission to drive the green\, digital\, and social transformation of the European society through youth’s perspective.\n​\nAs Y.H.E.’s annual gathering\, the 2026 edition will be held in a hybrid format for the first time\,  bringing together young heritage professionals\, students\, researchers\, and representatives of cultural institutions and civil society from across Europe.​\n\nPalermo is one of the Mediterranean’s most layered cultural capitals — a city shaped by centuries of overlapping civilisations\, faiths\, and traditions. Its rich built heritage\, dynamic civil society\, and its renowned Le Vie dei Tesori Festival make it an ideal setting to explore youth engagement and  cultural heritage at the local\, regional\, and transnational levels. SUMMARY:18th World Congress of the Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC)
DESCRIPTION:The OWHC’s New Urban Project for Historic Centers\nThe World Congresses of the Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC)\, held every two years\, are major events for exchanges\, work\, and decisions that bring together all members. The 18th Congress in Marrakech will feature two main events: The Symposium\, during which the OWHC’s New Urban Project for Historic Centers will be presented. This program is the result of several years of intense work by member cities. It is an original and specific contribution by the OWHC. \nThe 29th General Assembly of OWHC members\, during which member cities will decide on the Action Plan and budget for the coming years. Since 2022\, the OWHC has been undergoing a major evolution aimed at strengthening its political and operational dimensions. With its New Urban Project\, the OWHC wishes to become a platform for promoting a vision of the 21st-century city\, where the historic center is the cultural\, social\, and economic heart capable of responding to contemporary challenges\, with a focus on habitability. The Congress in Marrakech will be the starting point for a new phase of cooperation between member cities and partnerships with international actors committed to the preservation and development of World Heritage cities.
