SUMMARY:IE Webinar: Lessons learned from sharing dolphins with guests
DESCRIPTION:The South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR) has existed for 75 years and dolphins have been a part of its programme since 1976. This webinar will illustrate lessons learned in the time these amazing animals have been shared with guests. In a time when animal wellbeing is paramount\, it is essential that besides achieving optimal welfare\, we also respectfully educate and inspire the public\, whilst maintaining the dignity of the precious animals. This webinar will provide an overview of the lessons learned that assist SAAMBR to achieve this objective. Part of the work has been to produce and evaluate guest experiences. Working with Dr Judy Mann Lang supported a passion to learn more about evaluating the products to ensure the best for the animals and for conservation\, and at the same time\, fulfilling guest expectations. Gabby has a keen interest in ethical communication with animals and has written a couple of books on the subject.

SUMMARY:IE Webinar: From ABCs to Azores\, Birds and Campaigns
DESCRIPTION:The SOS Cagarro campaign was launched in the Azores in 1995 and aims to protect young Cory’s Shearwaters disoriented by artificial lights during their first night flight. The initiative\, which has become one of Portugal’s oldest environmental education campaigns\, mobilizes the community to rescue and release the birds. Volunteers\, schools\, associations and government entities all take part. Using children’s literature as a conservation tool – the case of ‘A história do Zeca Garro’ in the SOS Cory’s Shearwater Campaign. Carla has worked on this campaign since 2005 and has produced several communication products for it: a children’s music CD\, a computer game and a children’s book. The book was created and produced with scientific\, educational and ecological concerns that Carla will share with you\, reflecting upon the 20 years that have passed since its release. In 2005\, Carla joined the Pico Island environmental education centre and started working in the nature conservation campaign SOS Cagarro.

SUMMARY:IE Webinar: West Coast Fossil Park communicates palaeoscience to the public
DESCRIPTION:10 February 2026\, 15:00 CET\nThe West Coast Fossil Park (WCFP) is an important centre for palaeontological research\, education\, and tourism. Located in a rehabilitated former phosphate mine\, the Park supports ongoing fossil research and opened to the public in September 1998. It initially operated as a partnership between Iziko Museum and BHP Billiton\, after which a trust was established and governance transferred to trustees appointed by Iziko Museum. \nFor its first 20 years\, the Park operated from a small visitor centre in the Chemfos Mine building\, approximately 1 km from the main dig site at E Quarry. \nIn 2018\, a new visitor centre funded by the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) opened within E Quarry\, about 250 m from the main excavation site led by Professor Roger Smith. The centre was designed to accommodate up to 500 visitors per day. \nThis online presentation outlines the history of the Park and highlights the operational challenges that must be addressed to ensure long-term sustainability. She joined the South African Museum (now Iziko Museum) in 1977\, working in the Cenozoic Palaeontology department on the Langebaanweg fossil collection under Dr Brett Hendey. She played a key role in initiating the Fossil Park project in 1992 and has managed the Park since its opening in 1998. \nWith a lifelong interest in birds developed during childhood on a farm\, Pippa later specialised in palaeo-ornithology\, inspired by the richness of fossil birds at Langebaanweg. Her research has contributed to discoveries that continue to refine existing theories\, and she emphasizes that fossils are essential to understanding how life on Earth has changed over time.

DESCRIPTION:16-19 April 2026 in Faro\, Portugal \nWe will gather in Faro to discuss how interpretation can enhance the value of heritage – both natural and cultural – for people and societies in European democracies.\nIt was here where the Council of Europe launched the “Faro Convention” in 2005\, embarking on a journey towards more democratic\, people-centred\, and value-based practices in dealing with Europe’s heritage.\nThe official legal text refers to cultural heritage only\, its underlying rationale matters for all heritage interpretation\, including natural heritage\, as Europe is facing multiple challenges.\nJoin us to discuss how the Faro spirit can inspire theory and practice of interpretation. And\, vice versa\, how new approaches to co-creative interpretation can empower Faro heritage communities while strengthening cohesion of democratic societies committed to European values and sustainable development as ideals which are rooted in Europe’s past. Find out more about the theme and call for papers here.  \nThe city of Faro and its surroundings\, in Portugal’s Algarve\, are alluringly rich in natural and cultural heritage. \nFaro is situated in the extreme south-west of Europe and the whole region has been shaped throughout history by the succession and coexistence of diverse cultures and religions arriving by land and sea. It can look back on a turbulent past and it displays traces of these events everywhere. Many names in present-day Portugal and Spain testify to the influence of Romans\, Byzantines\, Visigoths and finally Moors. For centuries\, explorers set sail from the Iberian Peninsula exporting\, in turn\, influences from this region.\n \nWhat the Muslims once called Al Gharb\, which simply meant the West\, is what we now know as the Algarve and\, with plenty of sunshine and beaches\, it is one of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations. But the Algarve is much more than that. Between the Atlantic Ocean and the mountains in the hinterland\, we can discover a diverse landscape rich in natural and cultural treasures. \nThis geologically diverse landscape is the home of carob\, fig\, almond and eucalyptus trees\, not to mention the ancient olive trees and mighty cork oaks.
