SUMMARY:IE Webinar: Ephemeral heritage - A decade of summer fieldwork and student projects on heritage sites
DESCRIPTION:The webinar will focus on the work during the past decade (2013-2023) in a small village of Transylvania (Romania). The village of Călugăreni is home to an annual summer fieldwork focused mainly on the site of the former Roman auxiliary fort and its surroundings. As architects they focus on both the interpretation of the archaeological site and the heritage of the old szekler village. With the help and support of the Mureş County Museum they developed a unique way to research and interpret this heritage using mainly small-scale interventions as primary tools. They wanted to show how ephemeral architecture could be an economically and environmentally more sustainable alternative for those sites – even in accordance with the most strict requirements of UNESCO. Gergely will also provide a wider scale representation of how their work could be part of the university curriculum and beyond that part of our daily work in architectural practice.\n\nIf you wish to take part in the webinar\, please register here at least one hour before the webinar begins. ***Register using the same email address associated with your IE membership.*** \n\nGergely Sági was made a Doctor of Architecture in 2023\, and is a full time lecturer at the Department of Explorative Architecture of the Faculty of Architecture of BUTE. He is the founder and leader of AETER\, a practice based in Budapest since 2021\, completing several projects at different scales in Hungary\, Romania and Kazakhstan\, with wide expertise on heritage protection\, small scale interventions and exhibition design. His fields of research are the changes of the cultural landscape and its impacts and meanings as well as the possibilities of creating a more sustainable way of interpreting this landscape and our heritage within. Having supported the development of younger generations since 2012\, university life plays a dominant part in his professional life\, alongside wide international experience: far and beyond European collaborations (e.g. in Spain\, Romania and Germany) he also took part in several programmes focusing on the Middle East (Iraq\, Lebanon\, Syria)\, Northern Africa (Egypt)\, the Americas (Mexico) and Central Asia (Kazakhstan).

SUMMARY:NAI Conference "Navigating Changing Tides"
DESCRIPTION:Selected for the site of the NAI 2024 National Conference\, St Augustine\, Florida has been “Navigating Changing Tides” historically\, culturally\, and environmentally for hundreds of years. The site of great tragedy as well as great hope and celebration\, it is a perfect site for sparking interpretive conversations. \nThe surrounding area has been an indigenous homeland\, a colony\, a military fort\, a target of piracy\, a respite for the Gullah Geechee population\, a center for civil rights advancement\, a city of wealth and leisure\, a college town\, and a popular tourist attraction. Located on the Atlantic shore of northern Florida\, St Augustine has 43 miles of pristine beaches\, and is currently one of the fastest growing counties in the US. Changes related to population growth and increasingly severe weather patterns\, also make this area an environmental hot spot. No matter your interpretive focus\, you will meet with amazing peers in St Augustine in which to share ideas\, grow with\, and learn from.

SUMMARY:IE Webinar: Inclusivity outside the classroom
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 26 November 2024\, 15:00 CET \nIn our efforts to create more inclusive spaces\, it’s essential to ask: what does true inclusivity look like? This talk will delve into the principles and practices of inclusive environmental education\, with examples of both outstanding achievements and missed opportunities. Together\, we’ll explore the power of multisensory interpretation in making nature and science accessible to all. I will showcase the award-winning Cape Leopard Trust’s innovative approach with ‘Footprints in the Fynbos\,’ a resource tailored for various abilities and translated into multiple South African languages. This project integrates accessible materials like dyslexic-friendly fonts\, Braille\, audio\, and sign language\, enhancing literacy and environmental understanding for differently-abled children. A showcase of how science is communicated by breaking down barriers\, fostering inclusivity and a deeper connection to nature. If you would like to join for this webinar\, register here. \nChris Eksteen is a passionate advocate for people with disabilities. His dedication became apparent when he sought a suitable toy for a family friend’s young boy who had visual impairments. When requesting assistance from a toy store salesperson to locate toys for visually impaired children\, he was met with the response\, “Children who are blind do not play.” This disheartening encounter highlighted the widespread misunderstanding around people with disabilities. Motivated by this incident\, Chris pursued a master’s degree in environmental education. His studies revealed a broader exclusion of visually impaired individuals from environmental education in South Africa. Today Chris has 20 years of experience in the environmental education and conservation science sector\, with a deep understanding of the nonprofit world. He is especially passionate about monitoring and evaluation\, organizational development\, program rescue\, and strategic problem-solving. Currently\, he is the Chief Operations Officer for the Cape Leopard Trust in South Africa. \nPhoto Credits: NPR

SUMMARY:Speak at NEMO’s European Museum Conference “Can we talk? Museums facing polarisation”
DESCRIPTION:NEMO’s European Museum Conference “Can we talk? Museums facing polarisation”\, taking place from 10-12 November 2024 in Sibiu\, Romania\, seeks to address the vital role museums (can) play in today’s challenged democracies. Be part of shaping the conference by submitting a proposal for the programme until 19 June. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur societies are facing massive and disruptive challenges\, and societal divisions seem to deepen by the day. Cultural institutions such as museums\, therefore\, are increasingly under pressure. At the NEMO European Museum Conference we will together explore the power museums have to face polarisation: Which possibilities do museums have to navigate controversies and foster dialogue and debate? How can museums better respond when caught in the crosshairs of socio-political debate? Additionally\, the conference will discuss how to build strong relationships with underrepresented groups and foster their representation in polarising times. Finally\, we will bring to light the growing political pressure that museums worldwide are grappling with; inviting and analysing possible (re)actions as models for prevention. \nLet’s get inspired by examples from European museums and successful strategies from other sectors and reflect on our museums’ operations and the options we have – including effective community engagement\, governance models\, and conflict management strategies.

SUMMARY:Interpreting our heritage for a better tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Cultural and natural heritages are the floor from which people look to the future. They are home to great opportunities. One of them is its possibility to help connect people with their places\, their history\, or to learn about the stories of others; as well as to recognize the value of the natural environment in which we live. When these heritages are disseminated in an enjoyable\, fun and meaningful way\, people strengthen their ideas about the fact that there are things worth pursuing and preserving. \nThe interpretation of heritage helps the bond between people and their heritages to grow and become more resistant to the ups and downs of our modernity\, suggesting that it is worth stopping to appreciate our environment\, our history and our historical moment. \nWith the tools of heritage interpretation\, tourist guides\, museographers\, disseminators in nature reserves\, biological reserves\, historical or archaeological sites\, archivists and other people who work closely with cultural and natural heritage\, obtain tools to provide memorable and meaningful experiences to their visitors\, while contributing to the preservation of the richness of our heritage. \nInterpatMx\, Mexican Association of Heritage Interpreters\, invites interpreters\, disseminators\, mediators and communicators of cultural and natural heritage to its First Face-to-Face Congress on Heritage Interpretation under the theme Interpreting our Heritages for a Better Tomorrow. \nThis will take place on October 3\, 4 and 5\, 2024 in the city of Morelia\, Michoacán (Mexico) in face-to-face mode.

SUMMARY:FRH Conference 2024 "Religious Heritage in Transition: Challenges and Solutions"
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 FRH Conference\, “Religious Heritage in Transition: Challenges and Solutions” will take place from 22-24 September in Krakow\, Poland. \nReligious heritage must respond to the changes brought about by the emergence of new digital technologies\, the effects of climate change and the way we understand\, relate to and value our historic buildings and intangible heritage in 21st-century Europe. Our conference will explore existing initiatives and possible future solutions so that the various actors involved in religious heritage\, including heritage professionals\, academics\, policy makers at all levels\, religious bodies and European citizens\, do not fall behind in this triple transition (green\, digital and social). \nThe conference will address this overarching topic through four sub-themes: \n\nResilient Heritage: climate change\, armed conflicts\, migration\, secularisation and demographic changes are current challenges that can lead to the deterioration\, abandonment or even loss of religious heritage. This sub-theme will explore current efforts to address these urgent threats.\nSustainable Solutions: this sub-theme will address the long-term sustainability of religious buildings\, looking at trends in adaptive reuse\, protection of heritage crafts linked to built religious heritage and ecological sustainability in a context where more and more religious buildings are being closed\, neglected or underused every year.\nDigital Futures: the digital transition has brought with it a wealth of new possibilities for the study\, management\, protection and promotion of religious heritage\, but it has also raised many questions about the long-term impact of these technologies on the sector\, especially on traditional crafts.\nQuality of Life: religious heritage is often associated with various social\, cultural and spiritual values\, which are closely related to mental health and emotional well-being. This sub-theme will explore how sacred places positively influence people’s health\, especially cultural tourism\, pilgrimage routes and the protection of biodiversity and green spaces.\n\nThe venue will be the Galicia Jewish Museum\, an active institution in the preservation and promotion of Jewish culture in Poland with two permanent exhibitions dedicated to past and contemporary Jewish culture and life in the historic region of Galicia. Find out more about the venue here. \nSEE THE CONFERENCE PROGRAMME \nMEET THE SPEAKERS

SUMMARY:IE Conference Sustainability: Challenging mindsets through heritage interpretation
DESCRIPTION:Block 21 to 24 March 2024 in your calendar for the Interpret Europe conference entitled Sustainability: Challenging mindsets through heritage interpretation! \nThere is hardly any layer in our societal tissue that is not concerned by the serious situation that we are currently facing. Mainstream politics advocate more sustainable growth\, since any solution other than growth seems unacceptable to many people. On the other hand\, activists believe that people need to make a radical shift in their mindsets and lifestyles. \nCould museums\, monuments\, parks and other heritage sites help people to interpret heritage in a way that makes them more mindful towards our common future? Could they complement formal learning that is usually more focused on knowledge by reflecting upon our shared values? Could they also use the interpretive approach to initiate bottom-up movements and foster local small-scale initiatives leading to more sustainable thinking and acting? \nValue-based heritage interpretation has been recognised by UNESCO as a promising approach for fostering peace and sustainability and it is already being adopted by dozens of World Heritage Sites across Europe. Can it challenge people’s mindsets in a way that doesn’t focus on doom and gloom but keeps their spirits up for successful transition? \nKoper\, a green-labelled multicultural destination\, will be the location for our exchanges on such questions. Capodistria or Capo d’Istria\, as the Venetians called it\, is a small harbour city and the bilingual capital of the Slovenian coastal region\, but the conference will also be hosted by a dozen of other heritage sites from Slovenia\, Croatia\, and Italy. This lively crossroads area of cultures and languages\, the junction of South\, West and East\, is rich in history\, with a difficult past but now a more peaceful coexistence in a united Europe that should be able to inspire us. What’s more\, the karst hinterland with its countless underground caves\, Mediterranean vegetation and the wild  fir and spruce forests of the Dinaric Alps\, home to numerous rare species\, will provide us with many opportunities for taking deep breaths in nature. \nKoper can be reached by public transport from Ljubljana in 1.5 to 2.5 hours\, from Venice by bus in 3h\, and from Trieste centre in 30 minutes. Please consider travelling across Europe slower and cleaner by train or by bus\, meeting colleagues and visiting places on your way. \nThe conference will be organised by the UNESCO Chair for Interpretation and Education for Enhancing Integrated Heritage Approaches at the University of Primorska and the Faculty of Humanities UP. Primorska\, on the Adriatic coast\, is the westernmost region of Slovenia and the university building\, on the picturesque mediaeval town square of Koper\, will be our main venue. \nMake sure you join us in March 2024 at the IE conference entitled Sustainability: Challenging mindsets through heritage interpretation! \nIt offers an exciting programme created by colleagues from all over the world with speeches\, workshops\, presentations\, study visits and much more. You will be informed about travel\, accommodation\, presentations and much more in September. \nWe look forward to welcoming you to Slovenia – and its neighbours!

SUMMARY:IE Webinar: Making it a part of us\, becoming part of it. How to approach heritage?
DESCRIPTION:What is heritage? All of us have different answers depending on the particular context we are involved in. Yet it is often impossible to describe the subject of our interpretive work properly without putting it into different boxes: Cultural/natural\, tangible/intangible\, ordinary/canonized. In this webinar\, we will set aside these and other similar categories and introduce a concept which can influence how we work with different phenomena. We will claim that heritage has a dual nature and that this duality influences how we perceive it and how it develops over time. If you would like to join for this webinar\, register here.\n\nÁrpád Bőczén is a Hungarian architect\, heritage manager\, DJ\, president of KÖME / Association of Cultural Heritage Managers\, IE country coordinator and certified trainer. He is a project manager\, researcher and professional consultant in different projects related to education\, communication\, surveying\, development and maintenance of all kinds of cultural heritage and heritage communities. His main interests are the relations between heritage\, landscape and cultural changes.

SUMMARY:International Conference: Taboo in Cultural Heritage
DESCRIPTION:In the spring and summer of 2020\, a wave of statue defacements and removals spread across the world. As part of the Black Lives Matter protests\, monuments in many countries were labeled as inappropriate due to their relationship with colonial histories and racial injustices. This ‘burdened heritage’ was considered taboo: something that should not have a physical presence in public space. In that same year\, as a direct reaction to the Black Lives Matter protests\, the exhibition Are Jews white? (Jewish Museum\, Amsterdam) tried to break a taboo by discussing color and the question of where Jews find themselves in the identity politics spectrum of Black and White. \nSoon after\, a controversy about the ‘uniqueness’ and ‘comparability’ of the Holocaust arose: ‘Historikerstreit 2.0’ as it was frequently called\, with reference to the debate of the late 1980s. A number of historians pointed to the taboo against challenging the ‘uniqueness’ of the Holocaust by comparing it with colonial violence\, which is also present in the memory of these histories in today’s society (e.g.\, in monuments\, exhibitions\, restitution issues\, debates about apologies and reparations\, etc.). \nTaboo is a subject\, word\, or action that is avoided or forbidden for religious\, social or political reasons. Although there are certain taboos that appear to be virtually universal\, most taboos vary with cultures and times. Objects\, sites\, or practices appropriated as cultural heritage\, can at a later moment in history be redesignated as problematic\, no longer conforming to certain norms and values. Conversely\, (former) taboos can be contested\, eventually triggering the ‘heritagization’ and display of hitherto banned objects and sites. \nUnsurprisingly\, taboo and tabooed issues get less attention in humanities and heritage practices than the canon or the canonized. However\, canon and taboo could be considered two sides of the same coin; they are interdependent. For that reason alone\, it is important to address the subject of taboo as well\, and not turn a blind eye to it. For example\, the canonization of modernist art after World War II went hand in hand with tabooing art produced under National Socialism. Nowadays\, there is a renewed interest at museums in exhibiting these works\, sparking controversy and debate. \nThis international conference aims to reflect on the concept of taboo in relation to cultural heritage in the context of colonialism and national socialism and their reverberations in society. What can the dynamics of taboo convey about today’s globalizing world? How have taboos shaped (and continue to shape) and impacted the process of cultural heritage making? How do taboos generate heritage dissonance (Tunbridge and Ashworth\, 1996)? How does the concept apply to ‘difficult heritage’ (Macdonald\, 2009)? How do/could/should cultural heritage professionals deal with questioning the display\, adjustment or removal of such ‘burdened heritage’\, and is every heritage professional and scholar ‘allowed’ to address every topic? \nConfirmed keynote speakers: \n\nBerber Bevernage (Ghent\, Belgium)\nPumla Gobodo-Madikizela (Stellenbosch\, South Africa)\nSharon Macdonald (Berlin\, Germany)\nMichael Rothberg (Los Angeles\, USA)\n\n

SUMMARY:Transforming through co-creation: participatory heritage practices tackling urban challenges
DESCRIPTION:Cultural heritage practices are no longer exclusive to heritage professionals. Across multiple fields\, the importance and benefits of collaborating with multiple stakeholders are increasingly acknowledged and promoted\, with particular attention to the participation of communities\, groups\, and individuals. Different forms of multi-stakehodlers’ participation in heritage practices have been widely researched worldwide\, highlighting the benefits and challenges of these practices in different contexts\, but also revealing that some forms of participation may not lead to the intended results. Research also argues that empowering participatory heritage practices has transformative power\, thus contributing to more inclusive and equitable societies\, effective management of cultural and natural resources\, and sustainable development of the living environment. Hence\, participatory heritage practices can be key to tackling contemporary urban challenges and building resilient cities in this time of uncertainty. \n\n\nSince its adoption in 2005\, the Convention on the Value of Cultural Heritage for Society has aimed to promote more deliberative democratic processes and to foster the engagement of heritage communities in heritage management for the mutual benefits of heritage\, its governance\, society\, the local economy\, and the environment. Promoting co-creation approaches for a more sustainable\, inclusive\, participatory\, and high-quality living environment is at the root of many contemporary urban agendas (i.e. New European  Bauhaus\, New Urban Agenda\, etc.). Co-creation is a form of collaborative intervention that fosters the participation of relevant stakeholders to achieve common goals. Applied to the heritage field\, it aims at gathering those who convey value to heritage and are affected by its practices\, namely the “heritage community” proposed by the Faro Convention. To explore and address existing needs\, opportunities\, and challenges\, while attending to the ideation\, implementation\, and monitoring of solutions. However\, there is no simple road map for co-creation. The challenges range from engaging politicians and decision-makers to the definition of adequate tailor-made approaches to engage with communities\, groups\, and individuals in different contexts\, and the actual adoption and integration of co-created solutions into urban management practices. Therefore\, how to go beyond participation’s good intentions? What resources are there for local governments who want to make a change? How to sustain more deliberative democratic governance structures? How to implement truly transformative participatory approaches?
