SUMMARY:NAI National Conference in Virginia Beach
DESCRIPTION:Fort Collins\, CO — The National Association for Interpretation (NAI) opened registration for the annual NAI National Conference\, the largest annual gathering of heritage interpreters in the world. The event brings more than 600 professionals to a different corner of the United States annually. This year\, the conference will be held in Virginia Beach\, Virginia\, November 11–15. The conference slogan\, “Virginia Beach is for Interpreters\,” plays off the state’s iconic call to tourists\, “Virginia is for Lovers\,” adopted in 1969.\n\nPark rangers\, environmental educators\, living history interpreters\, tour guides\, docents\, and other nonformal educators will convene in an area replete with nature\, culture\, and history—and names! It’s known as Neptune City\, Hampton Roads\, Coastal Virginia\, and Tidewater. Within just a few miles\, nature lovers will find a zoo\, an aquarium\, a botanical garden\, a natural history museum\, and a state park. For interpreters of culture and history\, the area plays host to thousands of years of Indigenous history\, Black history\, military history\, and the colonial establishment of the United States.\n\nThe program has been carefully crafted to have broad application for front-line interpreters\, managers\, planners\, and others in the field. More than 70 concurrent sessions will address hot topics in the field and practical skills for interpreters. Opening keynote speakers Yuria Celidwen and Dacher Keltner will present “The ABC of Nature: Awe\, Belonging\, and Contemplation\,” and a closing keynote by André Copeland will address perceptions of truth and facts.\n\nPre-conference workshops will explore topics relevant to the field\, such as partnerships\, questioning our perspective\, dialogic interpretation\, and more\, while post-conference field trips will explore the natural\, historic\, and cultural heritage of the region. Amy is committed to reimagining museums as spaces for healing\, curiosity\, and futures rooted in dignity\, freedom and belonging. \nDr Wendy Black is the Chief Curator of Art and Social History at Iziko Museums of South Africa. She previously served as Curator of Archaeology. She specialises in the population history and bio-archaeology of the indigenous hunter-gatherer people of southern Africa – the Khoesan. Her research interests include population dynamics and genetics\, and in recent years\, she has also become involved in matters of indigenous rights and transformation\, particularly in relation to human remains collections and the representation of indigenous groups within South African institutions. Dr Black contributes to exhibition development and is actively involved in the supervision of postgraduate students.

In a time when animal wellbeing is paramount\, it is essential that besides achieving optimal welfare\, we also respectfully educate and inspire the public\, whilst maintaining the dignity of the precious animals. This webinar will provide an overview of the lessons learned that assist SAAMBR to achieve this objective. Working with Dr Judy Mann Lang supported a passion to learn more about evaluating the products to ensure the best for the animals and for conservation\, and at the same time\, fulfilling guest expectations. Gabby has a keen interest in ethical communication with animals and has written a couple of books on the subject.

SUMMARY:IE Webinar: From ABCs to Azores\, Birds and Campaigns
DESCRIPTION:The SOS Cagarro campaign was launched in the Azores in 1995 and aims to protect young Cory’s Shearwaters disoriented by artificial lights during their first night flight. The initiative\, which has become one of Portugal’s oldest environmental education campaigns\, mobilizes the community to rescue and release the birds. Volunteers\, schools\, associations and government entities all take part. Using children’s literature as a conservation tool – the case of ‘A história do Zeca Garro’ in the SOS Cory’s Shearwater Campaign. Carla has worked on this campaign since 2005 and has produced several communication products for it: a children’s music CD\, a computer game and a children’s book. The book was created and produced with scientific\, educational and ecological concerns that Carla will share with you\, reflecting upon the 20 years that have passed since its release. SUMMARY:IE Webinar: West Coast Fossil Park communicates palaeoscience to the public
DESCRIPTION:10 February 2026\, 15:00 CET\nThe West Coast Fossil Park (WCFP) is an important centre for palaeontological research\, education\, and tourism. Located in a rehabilitated former phosphate mine\, the Park supports ongoing fossil research and opened to the public in September 1998. It initially operated as a partnership between Iziko Museum and BHP Billiton\, after which a trust was established and governance transferred to trustees appointed by Iziko Museum. \nFor its first 20 years\, the Park operated from a small visitor centre in the Chemfos Mine building\, approximately 1 km from the main dig site at E Quarry. \nIn 2018\, a new visitor centre funded by the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) opened within E Quarry\, about 250 m from the main excavation site led by Professor Roger Smith. The centre was designed to accommodate up to 500 visitors per day. \nThis online presentation outlines the history of the Park and highlights the operational challenges that must be addressed to ensure long-term sustainability. She joined the South African Museum (now Iziko Museum) in 1977\, working in the Cenozoic Palaeontology department on the Langebaanweg fossil collection under Dr Brett Hendey. She played a key role in initiating the Fossil Park project in 1992 and has managed the Park since its opening in 1998. \nWith a lifelong interest in birds developed during childhood on a farm\, Pippa later specialised in palaeo-ornithology\, inspired by the richness of fossil birds at Langebaanweg. Her research has contributed to discoveries that continue to refine existing theories\, and she emphasizes that fossils are essential to understanding how life on Earth has changed over time.

DESCRIPTION:16-19 April 2026 in Faro\, Portugal \nWe will gather in Faro to discuss how interpretation can enhance the value of heritage – both natural and cultural – for people and societies in European democracies.\nIt was here where the Council of Europe launched the “Faro Convention” in 2005\, embarking on a journey towards more democratic\, people-centred\, and value-based practices in dealing with Europe’s heritage.\nThe official legal text refers to cultural heritage only\, its underlying rationale matters for all heritage interpretation\, including natural heritage\, as Europe is facing multiple challenges.\nJoin us to discuss how the Faro spirit can inspire theory and practice of interpretation. And\, vice versa\, how new approaches to co-creative interpretation can empower Faro heritage communities while strengthening cohesion of democratic societies committed to European values and sustainable development as ideals which are rooted in Europe’s past. Find out more about the theme and call for papers here.  \nThe city of Faro and its surroundings\, in Portugal’s Algarve\, are alluringly rich in natural and cultural heritage. \nFaro is situated in the extreme south-west of Europe and the whole region has been shaped throughout history by the succession and coexistence of diverse cultures and religions arriving by land and sea. It can look back on a turbulent past and it displays traces of these events everywhere. Many names in present-day Portugal and Spain testify to the influence of Romans\, Byzantines\, Visigoths and finally Moors. For centuries\, explorers set sail from the Iberian Peninsula exporting\, in turn\, influences from this region.\n \nWhat the Muslims once called Al Gharb\, which simply meant the West\, is what we now know as the Algarve and\, with plenty of sunshine and beaches\, it is one of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations. But the Algarve is much more than that. Macdonald rented Bellevue House for thirteen months between 1848 and 1849\, nearly two decades before becoming prime minister of the new Dominion of Canada in 1867. Since 1967 the site had shared Macdonald’s vision for Canada as a British society. \nIn 2024\, the site reopened\, offering a renewed visitor experience focused on sharing Canadian history. Today\, at Bellevue House\, alongside the life history of Macdonald\, we share the impact of his governments’ policies through the many voices of confederation\, where Indigenous Peoples communicate their experiences of actions taken to serve this vision. The case studies demonstrate specific tools used to transform historical archives\, architectural heritage\, and abstract research data into spatial dramaturgy and scenographic language. \nBarbora Klapalová is an architect\, scenographer\, and exhibition designer based in the Czech Republic. She is the founder and art director of Play to Lift\, a studio focused on storytelling through space and narrative exhibition design. Her work combines architectural thinking\, dramaturgy\, and visitor-centred interpretation\, with a strong emphasis on process\, structure\, and the emotional readability of space. Her projects include exhibitions and interpretive concepts for the National Museum and the Museum of the City of Prague\, among others. Her research interests have included the interpretation of the Great Depression of the 1930s and museum depictions of women convicted of violent crimes\, particularly infanticide. \nDr Katz has developed interpretation strategies for municipalities\, institutions and infrastructure projects\, as well as undertaking small site and single-building projects. In her interpretive practice\, she is particularly committed to developing innovative ways for communities to address difficult historical narratives and sites.  \nJustine Dalla Riva is the Executive Director of Her Place Women’s Museum Australia\, the country’s dedicated museum of women’s history\, located at the Abbotsford Convent in Melbourne — itself one of Victoria’s most significant heritage sites. Her Place officially opened in March 2026\, celebrating the lives and legacies of Australian women and championing their visibility in the public landscape. \nPrior to Her Place\, Justine spent six years as inaugural CEO of the Victorian Pride Centre — Australia’s first purpose-built LGBTIQA+ cultural and community hub — where she led the organisation from concept through to a thriving cultural institution welcoming more than 65\,000 visitors in its first two years. \nWith a background in communications\, strategy and not-for-profit leadership\, Justine brings a practitioner’s perspective on how institutions can bring overlooked narratives to new audiences and make women’s stories not just visible\, but central. \nShelly Kube is the Manager of the Cascades Female Factory in South Hobart\, Tasmania. This World Heritage-listed site preserves the extraordinary history of thousands of convict women and children who lived\, worked\, and faced punishment within its walls. DESCRIPTION:The Norwegian National Organizing Committee for ICOM-CC 2026 welcomes you to the 21st ICOM-CC Triennial Conference in Oslo 14-18 September 2026. For more than a decade\, a significant investment has been made into institutions dedicated to art\, cultural heritage\, and conservation in Oslo. The capital of Norway has become a truly cultural destination. Several major initiatives in Norway’s museum sector have resulted in The Munch Museum which opened in 2021\, the National Museum in 2022\, and the new Museum of the Viking Age\, scheduled for completion in 2026. These exceptional new museum buildings are driving the production of new knowledge and helping to strengthen the conservation field. \nOslo is a compact venue where events\, social programs\, and accommodation can be planned within walking distance of each other\, allowing more time for conference activities\, and for conversations and meetings. \nThe theme for the 2026 triennial conference is: \nCultural Connections in Conservation. \nCultural connections touch upon the very reasons we conserve cultural heritage. DESCRIPTION:The 19th Conference for Cultural Tourism in Europe will be held in Skiathos\, Greece\, on 23-26 September 2026\, with overall theme:\nSustainable Tourism Strategy and Culture Compass for Europe:\n​Synergies for Regenerative\, Smart and Resilient Cultural Tourism\n \nThe 19th ECTN conference with main theme ”Sustainable Tourism Startegy and Culture Compass for Europe:\n​Synergies for Regenerative\, Smart and Resilient Cultural Tourism” ​will discuss the latest trends in the field of culture\, heritage\, smart and sustainable tourism; including innovation\, ​resilience and renegerative cultural tourism development (for the 1st time). The emphasis will be on the important role of culture and heritage\, digitalisation\, resilience\, regeneration and sustainability\, related to enhancing visitor experiences\, smart tourism\, and smart destinations. \nKey latest developments at the European level will be particularly the focus in 2026\, suchas the forthcoming EU Sustainable Tourism Strategy (expected to be launched in April 2026) and the Culture Compass for Europe\, already launched in November 2025 and including Cultural Tourism. \n​The ECTN 2025 Conference is organised in the framework of the INSPIRES SMP Project\, the ‘Transition Pathway for Tourism‘ co-implementation (European Commission DG MOVE\, formerly DG GROW)\, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) concerning Tourism.  \nThe conference aims to explore major challenges\, risks and opportunities for resilient\, smart\, sustainable\, and regenerative tourism development related to culture and heritage assets\, as well as suggest practical steps for the development and promotion of cultural tourism products. The theme encompasses all forms of culture\, including contemporary cultural expressions\, all forms of cultural heritage and smart solutions.\n \nPresenters are invited to showcase relevant experience\, share their best practices\, give detailed examples\, and provide practical recommendations for preserving\, restoring\, deploying\, and promoting culture and heritage values\, with innovations for smart\, sustainable\, and regenerative tourism development.\n  \nThe conference is organised in close cooperation with the Skiathos Municipality and ECTN members. \nThe submitted Abstracts should address at least one of the following topics linked to resilient\, smart\, and sustainable cultural and heritage tourism: \n\nResilience in Sustainable Cultural Tourism Destinations (linked to the INSPIRES SMP-COSME project)\, including natural heritage\, green transition\, and climate action.\nCreative Tourism and Co-Creating Cultural Tourism Experiences. Supported by the Creative Tourism Network.\nDigitalisation in Smart Tourism Cultural Heritage and Creativity aspects\, enhancing visitor experiences (linked to the ‘Smart Tour’ Interreg Europe project). Supprted by Europeana.\nTransnational Thematic Tourism products involving Culture and Heritage\, including European Cultural Routes and European Heritage Label networks\, cross-border and multi-destination tourism initiatives involving at least 2 countries.\nActive\, Slow and Accessible Tourism. Walking\, Cycling and Hiking Tourism around Culture and Heritage. Supported by ENAT\nRegenerative Tourism and Heritage-led Destination Regeneration. Synergies between Regenerative and Cultural Tourism. ​\n\nSubmission deadline: 30 June 2026. \nOther Information: \nThere will be no delegate fees for selected presenters attending the Conference (up to two persons per selected presentation).\nParticipants\, including selected presenters\, will have to make their own arrangements for travel and accommodation. ECTN cannot cover travel expenses.\nAbstracts and presentations accepted by the Programme Committee of the Conference may be published online with the author’s approval.\nA post-conference study tour on Skiathos Island is planned\, and selected presenters will be invited.\n​\nThe Awards ceremony for the ECTN prize for ‘Destination of Sustainable Cultural Tourism 2026’ will take place in conjunction with the Conference. DESCRIPTION:Youth.Heritage.Europe. and Le Vie dei Tesori unite to bring Europe’s premier youth heritage event to the Mediterranean! \nYouth.Heritage.Europe. (Y.H.E.) and Le Vie dei Tesori are pleased to announce the 2026 edition of the Youth Heritage Days\, to be held in Palermo\, Sicily\, between 22-24 October 2026. Taking place in the framework of the European Heritage Hub\, the event will support the EU-funded platform’s mission to drive the green\, digital\, and social transformation of the European society through youth’s perspective.\n​\nAs Y.H.E.’s annual gathering\, the 2026 edition will be held in a hybrid format for the first time\,  bringing together young heritage professionals\, students\, researchers\, and representatives of cultural institutions and civil society from across Europe.​\n\nPalermo is one of the Mediterranean’s most layered cultural capitals — a city shaped by centuries of overlapping civilisations\, faiths\, and traditions. Its rich built heritage\, dynamic civil society\, and its renowned Le Vie dei Tesori Festival make it an ideal setting to explore youth engagement and  cultural heritage at the local\, regional\, and transnational levels. SUMMARY:18th World Congress of the Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC)
DESCRIPTION:The OWHC’s New Urban Project for Historic Centers\nThe World Congresses of the Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC)\, held every two years\, are major events for exchanges\, work\, and decisions that bring together all members. The 18th Congress in Marrakech will feature two main events: The Symposium\, during which the OWHC’s New Urban Project for Historic Centers will be presented. This program is the result of several years of intense work by member cities. It is an original and specific contribution by the OWHC. \nThe 29th General Assembly of OWHC members\, during which member cities will decide on the Action Plan and budget for the coming years. Since 2022\, the OWHC has been undergoing a major evolution aimed at strengthening its political and operational dimensions. With its New Urban Project\, the OWHC wishes to become a platform for promoting a vision of the 21st-century city\, where the historic center is the cultural\, social\, and economic heart capable of responding to contemporary challenges\, with a focus on habitability. The Congress in Marrakech will be the starting point for a new phase of cooperation between member cities and partnerships with international actors committed to the preservation and development of World Heritage cities.
