The Rome Organising Team and all the Institutions in charge of archaeology in the city of Rome and in the region of Latium welcome the members of the EAA, with happiness and joy.

The 30th Annual Meeting of our charismatic European Association of Archaeologists will take place in the city of Rome, one of the most impressive locales for world archaeology and history, from the 28th to the 31st August 2024: Wednesday to Saturday, as usual.

The event is organised by the Department of Ancient World Studies of Sapienza University of Rome, in partnership with the Italian Ministry of Culture, the Municipality of Rome and the Lazio Region, and with the support of the public Universities of Rome end Latium, National Research Council, Foreign Academies and Professional Organisations. The practical organising tasks are performed by Symposia srl, our PCO.

Rome is called the eternal city, which pretended to be the capital of the world -caput mundi- and is renowned for its great beauty, or as the “open city”, embracing the world and its inhabitants. Its history grew from the vibrant prehistory around the mighty “blonde” Tiber River, to the birth of the city and the roots of the Republic and the Empire, made of law and rights, and not only of the power of the armies. The great change in late antique, becoming the Catholic Church seat, aiming at a worldwide view, marked the most visible continuity through change of our city. After World War II, it was the place where the first treaty later leading to the foundation of the European Union was agreed. It is the seat of FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) and ICCROM (International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property), and the Italian and Roman activism in peacemaking across the world is constantly visible. Its history of lawfulness and international spirit overcomes the darkness of some moments of the past.

Rome is a great place to study the human capacity of persisting with change, as our motto says.

We hope our efforts to construct an inspiring programme, crafted of stimulating themes for successful sessions and presentations, will match your expectations, and that the keynote lectures, special events and amazing locations will bring food for our archaeological thoughts. The sparkling social events, like in all EAA Meetings, will create new connections and contacts for your life and work.

We carefully chose excursions as immersions in archaeology and beauty and we are certain that the lively spirit of the city will make for an unforgettable experience, wandering the town and continuously finding bits of archaeology and history in the urban framework and in the countryside.

We are looking forward to meeting you in person as well as in virtual mode, in physical or digital Rome. Rome is forever and for everyone!

Ciao (as Italians say)!
