It is the dreadful fate of humanistic education: As soon as violence starts, it is too late. What could heritage interpretation do to defuse potential conflicts, from small to large scale? What are the key concepts to consider? And what does this mean for interpretive training? In search of answers, former IE Managing Director Thorsten Ludwig will trace the evolution of Interpret Europe over the past five years, from its conference, ‘Heritage interpretation – for the future of Europe’, through the EU award-winning initiative, ‘Engaging citizens with Europe’s cultural heritage’, to the recent collaboration with UNESCO on ‘value-based heritage interpretation’. It is time to think about the further development of the interpretive profession.

Featured presenter, Thorsten Ludwig (MSc Interpretation: Management and Practice) studied archaeology and worked at a German national park until 1993 when he founded Bildungswerk interpretation as his own consultancy. From 2015 to 2021, he was Managing Director of Interpret Europe.
