The Europe Day Manifesto 2020 has seven brief chapters. Within the second chapter, ‘Being Europe’, it includes the passage: “How European citizens feel and understand their shared heritage and how this process of heritage interpretation is facilitated, is critical for the future of Europe”. This statement is rooted in Interpret Europe’s Call from Mechelen, that emerged from the IE conference 2016, ‘Heritage interpretation for the future of Europe’, and in the IE initiative 2017 ‘Engaging citizens with Europe’s cultural heritage’. By including this statement into its Manifesto, the European Heritage Alliance underlines the significance that non-formal learning at heritage sites has for the European project.
