Are you designing visitor centres or exhibitions, or are you planning ways to reuse historic buildings? Are you involved in regional planning or do you work on a single site? In any case, this course is right for you!

Interpret Europe is launching the first European course for interpretive planning. The pilot will be held in Rijeka, Croatia, from 12-16 November 2018. No prior knowledge in heritage interpretation is required.

Planning with an impact

Decisions in interpretive planning should have an impact on people and on their engagement in society. For this reason, we will be using innovative tools and techniques in order to conduct research and analysis of visitors or residents, site and management, existing interpretation and resources available. Special consideration will be given to working with communities and to evaluation techniques. According to standards in heritage interpretation, our plans will aim to achieve the following outcomes:

  • Turning phenomena into experiences
  • Offering paths to deeper meaning
  • Provoking resonance and participation
  • Fostering respect for all heritage

Outcomes:

  • Conducting and analysing research of heritage resources, visitors or residents, site management and policies
  • Making informed decisions about the choice of media and means, justifying these decisions and verifying them through evaluation processes
  • Encouraging and facilitating participatory processes with stakeholder communities
  • Creating innovative solutions for promoting values, critical reflection and independent meaning making

Professional accreditation

Upon satisfactory completion of the course and follow-up tasks, participants are awarded the title of Certified Interpretive Planner by Interpret Europe and join an inspiring community of heritage interpretation professionals.

Tasks required for certification:

  • 100% attendance
  • Interpretive plan on the model site (group work)
  • Interpretive plan on your own site (homework)
